Westfield's Mark Drinkwater missed a last minute penalty at East Court as East Grinstead kept their promotion push on track in County League Division Two.
East Grinstead pulled off a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Referee Roy Cheshire spotted some pushing by keeper Scott Kenward in the final seconds but Drinkwater scuffed his penalty wide to give Grinstead all three points as they battle it out with Eastbourne Town, East Preston and Lancing for what is increasingly looking like the third promotion spot.
In a see-saw match, Mark Ward gave the visitors the lead before James Horner levelled. Kevin Rose then restored Westfield's lead but Matt Thorpe replied before Dave Garrett scored direct from a free kick to give the hosts the lead for the first time.
Wasps manager Bob Smith said: "We passed the ball well at times in the first half, but then we seemed to lose our way a bit. But I was quite pleased with the way we stuck at it. Bearing in mind the other results it was another important three points."
Eastbourne Town also kept up their momentum with an emphatic 5-0 win over Oakwood in which the goals flooded in from Yemi O'Dubade (2), Gary Brockwell, captain Mark Reeves and Mark Warren.
Manager Alan Walsh said: "It is going to be close. Unfortunately we cannot do anything about East Grinstead as we have already lost to them twice, but, like everyone else, we are now looking for Shoreham and Rye to do us a favour and take points off other sides.
"It is the third spot we are going for. As far as I am concerned you can forget about Shoreham and Rye, they are gone."
Leaders Shoreham enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win over Crawley Down who were reduced to ten men when they had keeper Matt Heasman sent off after handling outside his area. A deflected shot by Mark Pulling from the resultant free-kick in the 30th minute beat stand-in keeper David Connor while Martin O'Donnell grabbed the second with nine minutes remaining.
Rye and Iden won 3-1 at East Preston with an own goal, Keith Miles and Shaun Loft the marksmen while Clayton replied for the hosts.
Worthing United manager Geoff Raynsford is confident of a better second half to the season as they stretched their unbeaten run to four games by beating Lancing 3-2 at Lyons Way.
Raynsford said: "The pleasing thing is we are now getting players back. For the past two months we have suffered a horrendous injury list, been hit by holidays and suspensions and had the whole side ripped apart. Now we are getting everybody back and we should be able to look forward to the rest of the season."
Steve Pickles and Andy Preddy were back for United on Saturday but it was goals by Dean Wood, Graham Waller, with a powerful header, and Nigel Waller from the penalty spot which steered them into a 3-0 lead before Lancing hit back with Ryan Ford and Tony Miles on target.
Lancing boss Andy Gander felt the officials were partly culpable for his side's defeat as they ruled out an effort by Jamie Cole and missed an alleged foul on the Lancing keeper for the first goal.
At the bottom, Bosham picked up another point following a 2-2 draw with Mile Oak in which Stuart Probee and Mark Lampard netted. Oaks' goals came from Neil Roberts and Wayne Whittington.
Second from bottom Storrington went down 2-1 to Broadbridge Heath after conceding an 89th minute goal to Paul Gallagher. Vince Alfieri also struck for Heath while Storrington's goal came from Paul Wood.
Seaford sunk Shinewater 6-2 with a hat-trick from Steve Lambert plus further goals from Barry Knight, Duncan Kneller and John Snelgrove. James Body got both Shine's goals.
Withdean manager Mark Stevens just wants to forget Saturday's 6-1 Combined Counties premier division defeat at Hartley Wintney.
Roy Pook have Withdean a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute but they were 4-1 down by half time and controversially had Tom Graves sent off for a second bookable offence after the break.
