Residents are fighting plans to open a block of flats for people with mental health problems in Hove.

Brighton Housing Trust wants to convert a former residential care home for mentally-ill patients in Carlisle Road, Hove, into 14 studio flats.

Residents are angry about being asked to submit any objections before Monday, when they do not have full details about the proposals.

Resident Janet Slater, 37, said: "We don't know anything about these people, whether they are dangerous or on medication."

She said there had been problems with the previous care home, with patients occasionally being abusive to neighbours.

The home closed after a fire two years ago.

Miss Slater said: "The previous scheme had staff on site 24 hours a day but we understand with this scheme there won't be anyone there at night to keep an eye on things."

A residents' meeting took place in Carlisle Road on Wednesday, attended by Conservative councillor Brian Oxley, who said he would pass on their concerns to planning officers.

Coun Oxley said: "Neighbours are worried about who will be living in these flats and the level of supervision particularly in view of the previous history of this property.

"On the planning side, there are issues about whether a property of that size is suitable to take 14 units, considering similar houses in the road are divided into no more than three flats."

A spokeswoman for Brighton and Hove City Council said there were no plans to extend the period of consultation.

Brighton Housing Trust's John Holmstrom said: "It will be for people with mental health problems who no longer need to be in hospital and can live in the community without full-time supervision.

"We will make sure the level of support is proportionate to their needs. Residents have no reason to worry."
