Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company has led the way in taking people in wheelchairs and parents with buggies.

The city council has co-operated with levelling kerbs so these people can get straight on to buses without having to negotiate steps.

But from the end of this month, there will be restrictions, which mean double buggies will not be able to enter double-deckers and wheelchairs will be limited to one per bus. Wheelchairs will not be able to get on single deckers at all.

The irony is that these restrictions are having to be imposed because of the Disability Discrimination Act, which is supposed to be helping people.

Regulations stipulate only one wheelchair can be carried in a special position at the front, next to a grab pole, which stops other wheelchairs or buggies getting past.

The bureaucrats who came up with this nonsense were probably thinking of safety. Yet there have been no problems since the company introduced the new buses.

All they have done is to make things worse than before, restricting travel by bus for wheelchair users and people with more than one young child.

They should be made to see what they have done before ordering a bonfire of regulations so common sense can prevail on the buses once more.
