A toddler is in a critical condition more than a week after she was rescued by a neighbour from her burning home.

Stephanie Jenken, three, is receiving treatment for burns to her face, chest, back, legs and arms in Chelmsford Hospital, Essex, which has a specialist burns unit.

A hospital spokeswoman said Stephanie's parents had been by her bedside night and day since she was admitted after the fire on January 2.

She said: "Stephanie is in a critical but stable condition."

The toddler was rescued from her flame-filled living room in Chiltern Crescent, Durrington, by heroic neighbour Jeff Marriott.

The grandfather-of-three, who has lived in the street for almost four years, used a hose to battle his way through the blaze to rescue Stephanie.
