As a local taxpayer, continually reading about the cutback of services - particularly to elderly people and children - I commend Brighton and Hove City Council on its priorities and good sense in its lack of plans for the Queen's Golden Jubilee year ("You're snubbed, Ma'am", The Argus, January 9).
How can one justify 1p of public monies going towards a celebration of the continuance of what many people see as an irrelevant and offensive institution?
As for the Queen as an individual, it shouldn't need to be pointed out she is one of the world's richest women, in part because of the several millions she receives each year out of general taxation, a burden to date she has not had to bear.
As for the comments of Nicholas Soames - a living testament to churlishness - I suggest he put his money where his mouth is and donate a vast amount towards Sussex Golden Jubilee celebrations.
