Foundations have been laid to start work on the £2.3 million redevelopment of a leisure centre.

The first stages of the foundations and drainage for the Dolphin Leisure Centre in Haywards Heath are half way to completion.

The project will include a new gym featuring 70 work stations, a free weights area, a spa, sauna and steam rooms, four treatment rooms and a dance studio.

The main reception will be moved to the ground floor and a cafe-bar will be created.

A movable boom will be installed across the 33-metre pool so it can be reduced to 25m for competitions.

There will also be new conference rooms, improved creche facilities and a shop.

Councillor Mike Gilks, Mid Sussex District Council cabinet member for leisure and property, said the disruption had been kept to a minimum and the public were being very understanding while the work was carried out.

He said he hoped the residents of Mid Sussex would be proud of the facility once it was finished.
