As a veteran cinema historian, I read with great interest the article by Adam Trimingham (Weekend, January 12).
I was especially interested to see the reference to The Electric Empire, Haddington Street.
Although this cinema closed in 1932, the auditorium, apart from the seating, remained completely intact until the demolition of the building during the early Fifties.
The decor and the proscenium remained, the only alteration being the lateral construction of a timber "drop wall" towards the front of the circle.
This was possibly due to the rear area being used for offices or storage by the firm of electrical contractors (Southern Electrical Equipment Ltd) which occupied the building during the early Forties.
I am wondering if anyone, other than myself, can recall seeing a film there.
At the age of eight, I can clearly remember my teenage cousin taking me to see a film entitled Lottery Bride which starred Jeanette MacDonald and Joe E. Brown.
I can even remember the supporting film was Love Honour And Oh Baby which starred Zazu Pitts.
From February 1940 to September 1943, I worked as a projectionist at the Lido. This cinema had the most beautiful lighting and decor and, before being sold by County Cinemas to Odeon Theatres, had the unique distinction of including The Lido School of Dancing (Principal Miss. Margery Bentley), The Lido School of Motoring, a restaurant and a night club (The Lido Sports Club) at the rear of the building. The seating capacity was 2,081 seats. I know - I counted them.
I would be interested to hear from any surviving staff of that era.
