I am no lover of New Labour but to expect the Government to correct 30 years of under-investment in railways in three years is ludicrous.

As with health, education and the integrated transport policy, only a long-term strategy agreed by all mainstream political parties will deliver lasting improvements.

It is the interference of politicians in the three basic ingredients of a civilised society that has put us where we are today.

Any incoming government tearing up the recently announced ten-year SRA plan in three years' time would be a good example of such stupidity.

Politics is vital for democracy but the key issues affecting all our lives need planning, implementation and commitment from all politicians and electors alike, irrespective of political leanings.

This will not lead to boring politics. It will lead to a better country for this generation and those to come.
