Albion striker Dirk Lehmann is on his way back up to Scotland to sign for Motherwell for the rest of the season.
The Premier League strugglers would prefer to take him on loan, but Albion want them to take over his contract which expires in the summer.
Boss Peter Taylor said: "There are just one or two things to sort out, but I cannot see it being a problem."
Lehmann had a brief trial at Motherwell last week. He scored in a practise match and boss Eric Black watched him hit the target again for Albion's reserves at Northampton on Wednesday.
Black said: "He is excellent in the air, has reasonable pace and a good presence about him. He is also quite adaptable. He is a good centre forward, but he played centre half for Hibs as well."
Lehmann has made only six first team starts for Albion since ex-manager Micky Adams signed him from Hibernian on a Bosman free transfer last summer.
Motherwell are short of firepower after David Kelly's contract was terminated by mutual consent. Kelly was allegedly involved in a bust-up with Black and assistant Terry Butcher in a 3-1 Scottish Cup defeat at Dunfermline.
Another of Albion's fringe players is on his way out. Midfielder Geoff Pitcher is joining Woking on loan for three months.
