Bert Merritt does not miss the late lamented Rugby Special. Not when he can enjoy videos of Brighton matches.

Merritt stationed a cameraman on the Waterhall balcony for Saturday's impressive 44-3 demolition of Dunstonians and said the tape made interesting viewing.

He believes his action replays can help educate players, referees and even supporters.

Merritt said: "I thought the game looked good on video. It will be valuable for the players and even the referee asked for a copy.

"He said he had never seen himself on video before.

"There were times when the ref was criticised but, when we watched it on video, he was 100 per cent correct.

"You can hear the spectators' voices on the tape having a go at the ref and I think I know who it was.

"I only saw one mistake by the ref all day and even then I could see why he made that decision."

Merritt also believes players tend to be on their best behaviour when they know any misdemeanours may be caught on tape.

Highlights for viewers of the latest video included two great tries by 19-year-old scrum half Paul Pride.

The Brighton University student is described as "as slipepry as an eel" by his coach.

But the cameraman will have struggled to capture one of the game's lighter moments, soon after the half-time introduction of former Ireland prop Gary Halpin.

Merritt revealed: "At the first ruck he was on the ground and one of the Dunstonian guys was on top of him.

"As he pushed himself off the ground he said, 'I don't believe it, you're Gary Halpin'.

"Gary just smiled at him and said in that Irish accent of his: 'Pleased to make your aquaintance'."
