One of Sussex's top sporting families are urging more people to play the game they love.

The Jamieson family from Angmering have all represented Great Britain at petanque.

Dad Lee, 53, mum Angela, 48, and sons Ashley, 21, and Bradley, 16, flew the flag for Britain at tournaments abroad last year and they are bidding for more success this time around playing the continental-style bowls game.

Lee Jamieson started playing the game 20 years ago and his oldest son, Ashley, is one of the country's top players after starting at eight.

Ashley was a member of GB's four-man team that competed at the World Championships in Monaco last year, and the squad, managed by father Lee, finished 17th out of 45 teams.

Now the duo are both attempting to qualify for the next championships in Grenoble later this year and, with 16-year-old Bradley competing in the junior event, the Sussex family dominate the sport this side of the channel.

In the sport's heartland of France the Jamiesons have competed in front of 5,000-strong audiences against players who are household names and sign autographs for fans.

Back on home soil the family are encouraging more people to play petanque.

Lee said: "We need to get more youngsters playing the game. The pool of young players from which our future champions come is too small, at present it is only a hundred or so.

"It can be an extremely competitive and skillful game. There are a lot of tactics and mind games involved. My family and I love it and I would recommend it to someone looking for a serious game and the person who just wants to play socially.

The Brighton and Hove Petanque Club hold training sessions from 1pm onwards on Sunday and Thursday afternoons at the West Pier petanque terrain in Brighton and all are welcome.
