I am responding to the letter objecting to the proposed flats in Carlisle Road for people suffering from mental health problems (Letters, January 15).

I am very sorry the correspondent had problems with his or her neighbour who was mentally ill and sent to prison. Those suffering from mental health problems are the most misunderstood and suffer more prejudice than any other section of our society.

One in a hundred of us will develop schizophrenia at some time in our lives. Any family can be affected by mental health problems. Those suffering from schizophrenia should not be sent to prison but treated with compassion in hospital.

People suffering from mental health problems are far less likely to commit crimes than "normal" people. Press reports of crimes are witness to this every day. Far, far more disruptive neighbours are likely to be of the "yobbo" or criminal element than mentally ill.

Those suffering mental health problems are very frightened people and are much more likely to harm themselves than anyone else.

My own dear talented son developed schizophrenia at the age of 20 at university. After seven years of illness, he has been lucky enough to have been given one of Brighton Housing Trust's flatlets. I cannot speak too highly of Brighton Housing Trust for giving my son a chance to have normal independence and dignity.

The facilities and support staff are excellent. Much more accommodation is needed.

I challenge the correspondent to visit Brighton Housing Trust to see for him or

herself. You are very, very lucky if you or yours do not have need of their services.

I pray the trust is successful in its application for the flats. Please have more compassion and understanding.
