Detectives are building a case on the suspected murder of Jason Martin-Smith, which may be linked to the drive-by shooting of Hastings man Jimmy Millen.
Mr Martin-Smith's body has not been found but detectives have evidence he was shot last summer.
Three men were released on police bail this month after being arrested in Hastings on suspicion of killing Mr Martin-Smith, 28, of Camberley, Surrey.
Senior detectives will not be drawn on whether the same men are also suspects in the murder of Mr Millen, shot four times in the back in October in Tile Barn Road, Hastings.
Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Moore, leading Operation Darnel, said he would be consulting the Crown Prosecution Service over whether there was enough evidence to bring charges.
Scenes of crime officers have examined a lock-up garage in Battle Road, St Leonards, three miles from where Mr Millen was shot.
Police this month increased the reward for information leading to the conviction of his killers from £10,000 to £25,000.
