Nigel Bruce is mainly remembered as Dr Watson, a part he played admirably to Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes.
This character actor of the Thirties and Forties was wounded on the Western Front in the First World War, as was George Zucco, another famous Hollywood stock player of the time.
Basil Rathbone, incidentally, was awarded the Military Cross in the same campaign.
Nigel Bruce, by the way, was not quite so English as he seemed. He was born in Mexico.
