A driver died after his lorry veered across a road and collided with a parked van on the A27 near Lewes.
It is thought the 47-year-old had been taken ill at the wheel and police said it was lucky no other drivers were hurt.
The accident happened east of the Southerham roundabout.
The lorry crossed both lanes, mounted a grass verge and pavement and hit a parked Ford Transit. No one was inside the van.
The lorry driver, from Chichester, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, but died.
Police are withholding his identity until relatives have been told.
