The Etymotic MicroPro ER-4 earphones about to be released in the UK are designed to deliver an accurate sound from commercial recordings.
Small transducers go directly into the ear canal and sit a short distance from the eardrums, creating an air-tight seal which allows for superior sound-quality and extreme comfort.
The earphones are built by Chicago-based Etymotic Research, (www.etymotic.com) which specialises in designs to improve and protect hearing.
The ER-4s isolate the user from all external noise, delivering a full, dynamic range of sound without having to turn the volume up to excessive levels.
I am not a great fan of inside-the-ear earphones but I was surprised how quickly I got used to the headset.
The difference from conventional earphones is instantly noticeable. It is quite refreshing to listen to music at a reasonable volume without being distracted by everyday sounds.
The earphones are surprisingly compact and lightweight. They do not leave your ears feeling flattened and sweaty.
They come with a nice, squashy carrying pouch and fit easily into a shirt pocket. But quality like this doesn't come cheap.
Although they have a price tag equal to five cheap CD players, you get what you pay for.
If music is really important to you, then don't hesitate. Spend the money and enjoy the best sound quality around.
