Residents living near a river which burst its banks are facing an anxious wait to see how much more rain falls during the next few days.
Water was lapping at front doors and several cars were partially submerged at Pulborough yesterday.
However, there were no reports of serious damage to properties after pumping equipment was sent to the scene by the Environment Agency.
The River Arun which passes through Pulborough is the second- fastest flowing river in England.
Environment Agency spokesman Ray Kemp said: "The section of the river between Pulborough and Arundel is critical but we believe that the area should not cause a problem providing we do not get any very intense rainfall over the next few days."
Flood watch warnings are also in force for other areas of the Arun, as well as the whole of the River Adur and the eastern section of the River Rother.
West Sussex Fire Brigade said it had not been called out to deal with any flooding in Pulborough.
