Plans to build a £1 million subway under a busy bypass were announced today to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The new subway under the A27 will link the University of Sussex with the train and bus services at Falmer.
The proposed structure will be built 30 metres from the existing subway which, suffers from flooding and requires steel props for support.
It will also feature modern lighting and CCTV cameras.
Rob French, special projects manager at the university, said: "The existing underpass is narrow, scruffy, and poorly lit and has never been the decent gateway to the university we would like."
An exhibition of the plans will be held at the university on Monday, February 18, between 6pm and 9pm.
