An MP is calling for Newhaven's three railway stations to be replaced with a single one offering better facilities.

The town has three stations - Marine, Town and Harbour.

Newhaven Marine runs just one train a day to Lewes with no return journey.

The service runs at 9.30pm but is not advertised in the timetable.

Lewes MP Norman Baker said: "This is a rather bizarre arrangement. While harmless in itself, it does underline the need to sort out the station arrangements at Newhaven once and for all.

"I believe the present three stations should be replaced by one modern station which is adequately staffed and properly lit and has car parking and taxi rank facilities.

"There is a crying need to update rail arrangements in the town, both to provide a proper ferry connection and to give local people a decent local facility."

Mr Baker added: "I think the main station would probably be on the harbour site. I have discussed it for some time with the rail bodies but no one wants to do anything about it.

"I have raised it before in the Commons and will again."

Members of Newhaven Community Development Association also back the idea of a central station.

Administrator Sally Foote said: "The problem with Newhaven and the railway stations is that none of them have parking. The town station used to have but the land was taken back by Sea Containers, which owned it.

"The idea has been suggested for a railway station further out towards Lewes in the North Quay area of Newhaven. It would be an area where there was plenty of parking for railway users."
