I wonder if the brains behind the traffic-calming islands recently installed in Arundel Road, Peacehaven, have given any consideration to the blind bend which has now been created on turning into Arundel Road from Sussex Way?
Traffic approaching Sussex Way from Arundel Road has to give way at an island which is too close to the sharp bend. When cars have to cross to the other side of the road to get past this island, they are out of sight of the oncoming traffic until it is almost too late to stop. I have witnessed what could have been three separate head-on collisions on this bend in a week. Congestion in Arundel Road created by traffic having to stop at each of these islands would not be conducive to a free path for ambulances or other emergency services. One only has to turn into Vernon Avenue from Arundel Road to find cars parked on both sides of the road to such an extent a small car can just about zigzag through.
Before creating havoc with these islands an even bigger danger than speeding cars on this fairly narrow road surely a safer way of introducing traffic calming could have been considered. Soft cushions right across the road would have been preferable but if these were unacceptable, surely the placement of such cushions could be adjusted so they didn't interfere with the safe passage of larger vehicles such as ambulances.
