A murder inquiry was under way this weekend after a man was found stabbed to death in the street.
Detectives said the victim was stabbed repeatedly in the neck and abdomen with an 8in sheath knife.
The murder weapon has not been found but a sheath was found at the scene of the killing.
Police and paramedics were called to Nuthurst Place on the Whitehawk estate in Brighton at 10.19pm on Friday after a 999 call from a female member of the public.
They found the man lying in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "A man has been arrested in connection with the murder and is in custody at Brighton police station.
"Police are appealing for any witnesses in the area at the time to come forward."
A Home Office pathologist was due to carry out a post-mortem examination on the victim on Saturday.
The dead man has not been named.
