I just had to respond to Bryan Childers (Letters, February 6), who appeared to pour scorn on Brighton and Hove City Council's campaign to be designated European Capital of Culture 2008.

What a brilliantly composed, amusing and thought-provoking epistle - a joy to read.

However, as a passionate lover of Regency architecture with a penchant for fine art and literature but also as an "ageing rocker" in his (very) late forties, I have to say I profoundly disagree with every word of it.

As for our Fatboy's claim to musicianhood, I seem to recall a couple of years ago Mr Slim receiving awards for a top ten hit he had composed and produced himself.

Yes, opera, art, architecture and differing forms of music are all here and we should celebrate them.

And, as for Norman Cook, we must praise him like we should, for being a very bright light in the beacon of culture that Brighton and Hove has become.
