Passers-by could be forgiven for being stumped at the appearance of this mini-Stonehenge on the beach at Worthing.
Children have been climbing on the new addition and adults have peered quizzically at the wooden posts at Splash Point.
But far from the stumps having any spiritual meaning, they signal the beginning of a seafront makeover.
Borough parks manager Chris Bradley said: "People may be wondering what is going on but soon the plans will come to fruition and foliage will be planted amid the posts."
Splash Point is the first area to receive such treatment. If successful it may be extended to other parts of the seafront.
