Police are trying to find out what led to an elderly man collapsing outside his home with serious head injuries.

The 71-year-old had a large cut across his forehead.

He also had a bruised knee, fractured right arm and grazes to his mouth and nose.

He was found lying against the back gate of his home in Glanville Walk, Bewbush, Crawley, at about 9.15pm on Thursday.

It is believed he could have been there for up to four hours.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, where his condition is stable.

A police spokesman said the man could not remember what had happened.

He had been drinking in The Dorsten pub, Dorsten Square, Bewbush.

He left between 5pm and 6pm and walked home along Curtis Walk to Jewel Walk and Glanville Walk.

Anyone with information should call Detective Constable Heidi Duffin on 0845 6070999.
