A gang of teenagers made unsuccessful attempts to grab a handbag and a mobile phone from a group of friends in Crawley.
The gang of ten to 15 youths, aged 14 to 16, were walking the opposite way to the four friends, who were on their way to the cinema in the town centre.
One member of the gang tried to grab a 15-year-old girl's handbag but failed.
Shortly afterwards, a 14-year-old boy was punched and pushed into bushes. His attacker demanded his mobile phone.
The victim managed to hang on to the phone and ran to security staff to raise the alarm.
The boy who tried to grab the handbag was 14, Asian, 5ft 3in tall, stocky and wearing a beige baseball cap, jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt with a number on the front.
The youth who demanded the phone was 14, white, 5ft 7in tall and thin with shaved hair.
He wore a white baseball cap and white hooded top.
