Campaigners hope approval of a new slaughterhouse near Pulborough will help their fight against another abattoir.
Proposals for a slaughterhouse at Steepwood Farm in Adversane, near Pulborough, were given the go-ahead by councillors who said it was a much-needed facility, although they were still considering the design of buildings.
Animal rights protesters felt the decision might persuade councillors there were enough abattoirs in Sussex and to turn down an application for an abattoir at Blackstone Gate Wood, Woodmancote, near Henfield.
Residents fear another abattoir would increase traffic, cause smells and risk polluting waterways.
Protesters from vegetarian organisation Viva! dressed as cows, pigs and slaughtermen outside Horsham District Council offices on Tuesday and urged councillors to turn down the Woodmancote abattoir.
Campaigner Kat Macmillan said protesters would campaign against the Woodmancote abattoir until the "right decision" was made.
Councillor John Marsh said the Adversane abattoir had received only four letters of objection while the Woodmancote slaughterhouse proposals had received more than 700.
Yesterday The Argus incorrectly reported councillors had approved the slaughterhouse at Woodmancote.
In fact, the abattoir at Adversane was given approval. Councillors are expected to discuss the Woodmancote application next month.
