Brighton were made to work hard for their 2-1 win over Mid Sussex in the Kent/Sussex Regional League.
The result keeps Brighton a point behind leaders Holcombe but, with only three games left to play, it looks increasingly like the title will be heading to Kent.
Brighton led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Paul Daniels and Richard Cooke.
However, Mid Sussex fought back well in the second half and pulled a goal back through James Goodwin.
Elvis Brown then had a great chance for Brighton but the opportunity was spurned and that meant a tense finish to the game.
Worthing were hoping to do Brighton a favour away to Holcombe and they gave a good account of themselves before collapsing in the closing stages.
The leaders triumphed 6-1 but Worthing matched their hosts for long periods, even equalising in the first half when Matt Ansell found Dave Clayton to score.
Worthing skipper Simon Holloway said: "We did really well for 75 per cent of the game. At half time we really felt we could get at least a point out of it and, if we were lucky, maybe pull a win out of the bag."
Holcombe led 2-1 at half-time but scored four in the last 15 minutes.
