Red-faced rail bosses today withdrew a map of tourist attractions which put Derbyshire on the Sussex coast.

Virgin Trains blamed a printing error for the geographical muddle.

The map, of tourist attractions and towns in the Peak District, put historic Chatsworth House near Eastbourne and the town of Bakewell in the English Channel off Worthing.

It was supposed to attract tourists to Derbyshire and encourage them to get there by Virgin Trains.

The map also put Macclesfield in the Irish Sea and the Derbyshire spa town of Buxton in North Devon.

Today Jim Rowe, a spokesman for Virgin Trains, said: "It was a printing error and we apologise for any inconvenience.

"The maps, which had some useful information, such as bus links and detailed timetables, are being withdrawn."

Mike Gillis, chairman of the Eastbourne Hotels Association, said the town would welcome a magnificent stately home such as Chatsworth House on its doorstep.

Chatsworth is the home of the Duke of Devonshire, whose family has lived there for 450 years.

The Duke has strong links with Eastbourne and owns land in and around the resort.

Chatsworth promotions manager Simon Seligman said: "We are delighted to see us put near Eastbourne as the Duke owns quite a bit of the town."
