A 15-year-old girl fought off two men who grabbed her and tried to drag her into their car in Crawley.
She managed to fight off her attackers and run away but was shaken by the incident.
The teenager was walking along Waterfield Gardens in Bewbush, Crawley, at about 8.30pm on Wednesday, when a white car pulled up.
The passenger spoke to her briefly, although she could not make out what he said and the car drove off.
It turned round and the passenger got out. He grabbed the girl and started to pull her towards the car. The driver got out to help him.
The teenager fought off the men and ran off to raise the alarm. The car drove off towards Gasson Wood Road.
Detective Constable Andy Richardson said: "We are treating this very seriously as an attempted abduction and the key to solving this is the car.
"It's very distinctive with its blacked out windows and silver exhaust.
"We would like anybody who has seen it or knows who owns it to come forward."
Police now want to find the white saloon car.
Its rear windscreen and the back windows were blacked out and the car had a large, silver exhaust pipe.
The car's stereo was playing loud, heavy bass music. Both men were black and about 25 years old.
The passenger had shaved hair and was wearing a dark blue denim jacket and a dark blue or black cap with a motif or picture on the front.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened near the bridge that runs from Waterfield Gardens across to Hyde Drive.
They want to trace a teenage fisherman in a white tracksuit who was walking through the area.
Anyone who can help is urged to call Mr Richardson at Crawley CID on 0845 6070999 or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
