The King Alfred saga rolls on - or, at least, is a re-run of the Citygrove farce.
The same old ingredients, exaggerations, mis-statements and non-cerebral comments from some councillors.
According to these councillors, the building is about to fall down, the replacement costs will be £60 million and we must have 400 flats on this site to save Brighton and Hove.
However, the basic facts are that we have a very suitable sports site with some reasonable existing facilities and the city needs sports facilities for young people so they can be both fit and happily occupied.
Of course the facilities and building could be improved but this does not need to cost a fortune.
Other nearby towns have provided complete new sports facilities for about £15 million.
Nor should we give up any of the four-acre site for purposes other than sports, as sites elsewhere in the city could be provided by Brighton and Hove City Council.
We do not need commercial developers looking for valuable sites and large profits.
Our council, with some money from several known sources, is perfectly capable of developing what is good for the young people of our city, while retaining the ownership of this gem.
