Burgess Hill's attempt to finish the season unbeaten came to an end as they lost 2-0 at home to Selsey in division one of the Rich City County League.

Goals from Darren Lowery and Paul Lee condemned Hillians to their first defeat in 31 league games.

They remain odds-on to claim the title with only Ringmer having a mathematical chance of catching them.

Boss Gary Croydon said: "It would have been nice to try to get through unbeaten but we have a bit of a cushion and are not too bothered about it.

"It was a tall order to expect us to get through the season unbeaten. If you tell me we will get through next season until April unbeaten, then I will be very happy."

Selsey player-boss Danny Hinshelwood, whose side have now won six games on the trot, said: "This proves we can compete with the best sides."

Lowery opened the scoring in the first half after a neat inter-change with Ian Ford. In the second period, Churchill was denied a penalty before Jason Reed set up Paul Lee for the second goal.

The Hillians gave a debut to Bertie Foster, the 15-year-old son of former Albion and England defender Steve.

Meanwhile, Sidley joint-boss Peter Heritage was pleased Hillians' bid to finish the season unbeaten was foiled.

Heritage said: "I'm not being nasty to Burgess Hill but I am glad they have been beaten.

"It would have made all the other sides in the division look terrible."

Sidley did themselves no great favours in their quest for the runners-up spot as visitors Pagham held them to a 1-1 draw.

Teenager Shea Spreafico scored again for them after Pagham had gone ahead with a goal by Lee Stevens in the first period.

Round-up.

Ringmer made it three wins and 11 goals in six days as they beat Arundel 4-0 at the Caburn.

The pick of the goals was an individual effort from Graham Martin, while Tony Holden, Grant Bean and Darren Longley were also on target.

Chichester continued their push for second with a 2-0 win over visitors Hassocks.

Striker Jamie Laidlaw struck first for Chi but manager Adie Girdler was impressed with central midfielder Simon Fitt, who added the second.

Chichester moved into third place as they leapfrogged Three Bridges, who were beaten 3-1 at home by Micky French's relegation battlers Eastbourne United.

Scott McDonald opened the scoring for United and added a second from the penalty spot after Bobby Godfrey was brought down, before Andy Atkin supplied the third in the second half.

Bridges hit back with a Lee Butcher goal.

Three Bridges' former Albion defender John Crumplin has announced he will be retiring at the end of the season.

Crumplin said: "The old knees will not take me any further. I will be looking for a management job next season."
