A pane from a glass roof fell out and shattered in the middle of a shopping arcade in Worthing town centre.
No one was injured by the glass, which fell while there were no shoppers in the Montague Centre.
Centre manager, Alan Miles, said: "I don't know what caused the glass to fall out. Something like this has happened before when someone threw something at the roof.
"It was special safety glass that just shatters and falls down in small bits.
"A risk assessment will be carried out on the rest of the roof to make sure it doesn't happen again."
The pane is being replaced at a cost of £900.
