Tory shadow minister Alan Duncan displayed his own and his party's ignorance of the gay community when he was confronted by demonstrators in Margaret Thatcher and John Major masks at the recent Tory "meet the gay community" event in Brighton.
Contrary to the report (The Argus, April 19), there was no mystery about our protests. The banner "Section 28 Protect children from Tories" is clearly a reference to the homophobic legislation that prevents councils from promoting the local gay community and which Alan Duncan's party introduced and still supports.
Two Tory city councillors recently voted in support of Section 28. The Lesbian and Gay Group in the local Green Party staged the protest because it believes it is hypocritical for the Tories to court the votes of our community while, nationally, they are still committed to legislation discriminating against us.
