For a change from my theme of Hollywood support actors of the Thirties and Forties, I offer gossip columnist Walter Winchell, one of a group then known as "the terrible three".

The other two were Hedda (The Hat) Hopper and Louella Parsons.

They constantly vied for juicy Hollywood titbits, even inventing words. Where we would say "mug" or "dope", they would say "sap" or "klutz".

My favourite piece of Winchell's was What Famous Jungle Gent Was Made To Look A "Sapola" By Losing Two Hands Of Gin Rummy To A Chimpanzee On The Studio Lot?

He was, of course, referring to Johnny Weismuller, who played Tarzan.
