A controversial former Liberal Democrat mayor of Lewes has joined the Conservatives.

Graham Mayhew has been an independent member of Lewes District Council since he was kicked out of the Liberal Democrats almost two years ago.

His decision takes the size of the council's Tory opposition group to 18, although the Lib Dems retain control.

Dr Mayhew was sacked as mayor of Lewes in May 2000, half way through his two-year term, after plans he was spearheading to open an art gallery at the town hall collapsed.

He subsequently resigned as a town councillor and was later expelled from the Liberal Democratic Party.

The art gallery fiasco led to a public vote of no confidence in the town council and accusations by Dr Mayhew he had been victim of a witchhunt.

A report by local government financial watchdogs found no evidence of any financial irregularities but said there was confusion over key aspects of the gallery project and start-up costs were never properly explained to councillors.

Dr Mayhew has continued to represent Priory ward on Lewes District Council.

Tory leader Keith Moorhouse said: "He is a popular and hard working member who has served his ward and the district well.

"As a member of a larger Conservative group, he will receive the support of others in opposing any ill thought out and flawed Lib Dem policy proposals, such as the gravestones fiasco."

Dr Mayhew was a member of the Labour Party before joining the Lib Dems.

Council leader Ann De Vecchi said: "We await with interest to see the effect on the Conservatives."
