TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh today helped launch the biggest campaign to persuade residents of West Sussex to go green.
More than 320,000 households will be given the chance to buy specially-manufactured home composting kits at a fraction of the usual shop price.
The move follows a partnership between West Sussex County Council and all seven district and borough councils.
It is hoped the scheme will slash the amount of garden and kitchen waste which ends up being buried in holes in the ground and cut the amount of landfill tax paid to the Government.
Alan, of the BBC's Ground Force and Gardeners' World, has produced a guide to home composting which is being handed out this week at civic amenity tips.
The council partnership involves teaming up with Original Organics, which makes the compost bins and kit prices start at £10.
Copies of the guide can be obtained from council recycling offices or by calling 01243 777114. Phone 0800 0858088 to order a composter.
