Distressed as I was to hear of the incident with regard to the lift at Goldstone House, Hove, on bank holiday Monday, I would like to correct the implication these lifts are always breaking down (The Argus, June 4).
The fact is the lifts in this block and many others throughout the city suffer relentless vandalism. These lifts had been recently refurbished at some expense and fitted with vandal-proof doors to prevent constant deliberate door-jamming.
Goldstone House is normally covered by the Care-Link scheme, which would have dealt with the problem immediately.
For some reason I am unable to establish, the emergency services were contacted instead. Fire officers attended the scene and contacted the lift engineers, who released the lift.
The lift then appeared to work perfectly and no fault could be detected.
