Two pet iguanas were abandoned by their owners in a cold, empty flat and left to die.
They were discovered wandering in the flat in Connaught Crescent, Crawley, after the landlord became suspicious the tenants had moved out at least a week before.
Both reptiles were extremely hungry and had no heat or water available to them.
They did not have humid conditions either - which are essential for iguanas.
RSPCA inspector Melissa Cox said: "The owner or owners of these iguanas moved out and simply left the animals to their own fate.
"It is extremely lucky they survived. To abandon animals in this manner is cruel and heartless and is also illegal."
The iguanas were taken to a vet, where they were treated for malnutrition, dehydration and the effects of the cold.
The male iguana had lesions and abscesses on his tail, which had to be partly removed.
Both he and his female companion are responding well to treatment and are expected to be ready for rehoming soon.
Miss Cox appealed for information on who was living in the flat at 41 Connaught Crescent.
Anyone who knows who the iguanas belonged to should call the RSPCA on 08705 555999.
All calls will be treated in the strictest confidence.
