Readers of The Argus have ensured Bruce, the police dog who was put down earlier this year, will never be forgotten.
They raised more than £600 so a plaque could be put up at the Seaford home of his handler, PC Pete Tattum.
Bruce was destroyed by Sussex Police after he bit off part of a youngster's ear in a brawl in Brighton involving teenagers, some armed with knives and bottles.
Most readers felt Bruce was only doing his job and should have been retired rather than killed.
They have made contributions so generous that some money left over will be given to the National Canine Defence League.
Their contributions and the huge protest should also ensure police do not make the same mistake again should another dog fail to reach their exacting standards.
