Wartime songstress Dame Vera Lynn joined Sussex Police to launch a crackdown on doorstep conmen.
The campaign, Operation Secure, includes the introduction of a tape-recording system called Minder.
Elderly or vulnerable people can record a "Stop, Chain and Check" message which is played back whenever anyone moves in range of their front door.
The message reminds them: Are you expecting anybody? Do they have an appointment? Secure the door bar or chain before opening the door and ask for and double-check the caller's identity.
Minder will be given out to individuals and organisations across East and West Sussex.
Dame Vera, whose Sussex home has been burgled more than once, said: "I know from personal experience the effect such an incident can have.
"I am delighted to support the efforts of Sussex Police to reduce home burglary while paying particular attention to a crime that affects the older and more vulnerable members of society.
"The Stop, Chain and Check message, together with other initiatives to arrest criminals committing this style of crime, will provide reassurance for all of our communities."
