A grade II listed pub looks likely to be transformed into flats.
Council officers are recommending approval for the Kings Arms in Seaside, Eastbourne, to be converted into one and two-bedroom flats.
An application was originally put forward to turn the red brick three-storey pub, built around 1900, into flats and bedsits.
However, following concern from residents, the proposed bedsits were scrapped and the application resubmitted.
It is now planned to build a one and two-bed flat on the first and second floors, with another two-bed flat on the third floor.
Eastbourne Borough Council's historic buildings officer has expressed concern about the impact on the building's listed features.
Assurances have been given that all features, including the ceiling, the doors onto the balcony and skirtings, will be retained.
A report to be considered by councillors on the Lib Dem-held borough council's planning committee gives backing to the plan.
It states: "The scheme would bring a prominent building back into use for both commercial and residential purposes.
"Such use is likely to ensure the future maintenance of the building. Therefore the economic use of the listed building is generally acceptable."
The borough council's planning and licensing committee meets from 4.30pm today at the Town Hall in Grove Road, Eastbourne.
