In 1996, I first visited Stanmer Park as a volunteer conservationist and, since then, must have spent many more than 100 days working in the woods coppicing, tree planting and charcoal burning.
In about 1999, there was a survey asking for people's thoughts about the future of Stanmer and I replied that, as there were the remains of an old estate, we should, if possible, bring it back to life.
I suggested the house be renovated as a living museum because I understand it could be easily refurnished with items held in store by local museums. I have seen various other living museums around the country and feel this could be feasible.
In addition, I suggested the Great Wood could be restored as a working woodland. I understand, after the Great Storm of 1987, an investigation revealed that at least 20 people could be employed in the woods. I never heard the result of this survey.
The proposed developments, including the road, are extremely insensitive. If anyone intends to oppose these ideas, let me know. I will be only too pleased to give you my active support.
