A library appeal has raised £25,000 in its first four months.
Lewes Library Friends reached its first landmark on the way to the £500,000 it must raise towards the town's new book and music library.
East Sussex County Council ended months of uncertainty when it pledged £1.9 million to the project in January.
But campaigners need to make up the shortfall for the building at Lewes House, High Street.
Group chairwoman Joy Preston said: "We have a challenging target.
"We are approaching grant-making bodies, businesses and organisations for assistance as well as more individuals."
Several donations have been received of more than £1,000.
