Testing beauty products on animals should be banned, according to Sussex MP Norman Baker.

The Liberal Democrat is urging the Government to back European Union (EU) proposals to outlaw the controversial practice.

He also wants ministers to back a ban on adverts for shampoos, soaps, lipsticks and eyeliners that were tested on animals.

Many pharmaceutical companies use animals such as rabbits, dogs, mice and monkeys to discover if new products have any unpleasant side-effects.

But Mr Baker believes this is cruel and unjustifiable.

Now he is calling on Tony Blair to back a European Union directive outlawing the practice.

The Lewes MP said: "We are calling on the Government to support a marketing ban on new animal-tested cosmetics. And we want ministers to support a full ban on animal testing for cosmetics in the EU."

The proposed EU directive is about to get a second reading in the Council of Members, which is made up of representatives from the 12 member states.

Mr Baker has signed a Commons motion urging the Government to take action.

His stance has been backed by 21 other MPs.
