Successive Dukes of Norfolk have been based in Sussex rather than East Anglia but it's a quirk of history Arundel accepts with pride.
That's why flags are flying at half-mast and the town is in mourning following the death of the 17th duke.
Miles, Duke of Norfolk, was nothing like as colourful a figure as Bernard, his predecessor, who died in 1975.
But he made a contribution to the life of West Sussex, not least in ensuring Arundel Castle remains one of the best-loved tourist attractions in Sussex.
The duke continued the tradition of his predecessors by his generosity to the county and the town, particularly at the millennium, when he entertained thousands of people at the castle.
Sussex has been fortunate with the contribution made by the Norfolks and will hope the new duke continues the tradition.
