Soaring temperatures have sparked a mini crimewave.

More than 25 homes have been broken into in a spate of burglaries in Southwick in the past few weeks.

Flats and homes in the Rectory Road and Watling Road areas have been targeted by thieves.

In most cases, suspects climbed in through windows left open during hot weather while residents were out.

The thieves were looking for small items, including cash and jewellery, which they could easily carry.

Police said Rectory Road has been a particular target.

Sergeant Jane Derrick, of Adur sector police, said: "Burglaries have become quite a problem in that area in the past few weeks.

"The people responsible are opportunist thieves who go around looking for homes where there is easy access and people are out.

"On occasions, we have had burglaries while the owner is either asleep or outside in the garden.

"People should always shut and lock doors and windows, even if they are only popping out for a few minutes.

"Burglars will always exploit any opportunity they are presented with and it is better not to give them the chance in the first place."
