British men are beer-bellied, pasty weeds who get sand kicked in their face, according to some Americans.
Hunky Sussex men are being invited to quash this notion by taking part in a televised male model competition in Brighton next month.
Channel 4 will film the auditions organised by Men's Health magazine.
Editor Simon Geller, who brought the US view to light, said: "My American boss thinks all British men look like Rhys Ifans in Notting Hill, Noel Gallagher or Lee Evans.
"I can't wait to wipe the smile off his face."
Talent spotters will visit the city at one of only three regional auditions.
The winner of the grand final will receive a modelling contract and a four-day photo shoot in Miami.
Entrants must be 18 to 35, hold a British passport and be willing to undergo a drugs test.
The auditions take place at the Old Steine, Brighton, on July 29 from 10am to 6pm.
