Liberal Democrats have expressed alarm at new figures showing a decline in the number of family doctors.
The number of GPs per 100,000 people in East Sussex, Brighton and Hove has fallen in the past four years from 53.2 to 51.9.
Councillor Paul Elgood, Lib Dem leader on Brighton and Hove City Council, said the number of GPs was not keeping pace with the rise in population.
He said: "Local GPs are having an increased workload when many already face difficulties in seeing non-urgent cases quickly.
"Patients will be concerned at these figures when already many have difficulty in seeing a doctor either the same or the next day.
"Our GPs are under increasing strain and it is clear from these figures the Government has a big task in turning around frontline health care at a local level."
The figures were released in Parliament following a question from Oxford MP Dr Evan Harris.
