Sussex's batsmen have been urged to repeat their Championship form in the National League, starting in Jason Lewry's benefit game against Middlesex Crusaders at Arundel on Sunday (1pm).
Only two players have passed 50 in five games so far this season. Sussex have lost three of them and desperately need victory tomorrow against one of the two sides currently below them in the second division table.
Coach Peter Moores said: "It's not rocket science. In the only game where we have put partnerships together in the League we beat Essex.
"The batsmen have to start building innings. Scores of 30 and 40-odd are not going to be good enough to win many games, it's very difficult if you don't post decent totals.
"We have shown in the other competitions that we are a good one-day side. This is a must-win game for us and we've got to decide on a line-up that is going to score consistent runs."
The Sharks have delayed naming their squad because skipper Chris Adams is rated only 50-50 to play on the ground where he made a county record 163 against the same opponents three seasons ago.
Adams returned to the side this week after six weeks on the sidelines following a knee injury which eventually required surgery, but he may need to rest.
Tony Cottey (groin) is still sidelined so Tim Ambrose could be in line for a recall, but there is no chance either for Lewry to be the star of his own show.
Lewry said: "I would like to have played but it's what is the best for the team which is important.
"I didn't have a great start to the season in Grenada when I didn't play because of a knee injury and things have got on top of me a bit.
"But I'm working hard and hopefully I can hit some form and have a really good second half of the season."
