A new attempt is under way to persuade the Government to resurface a road branded the noisiest in Britain.
The A27 between Chichester and Havant opened more than 12 years ago and immediately led to a flood of complaints from people living nearby.
The eight-mile section of dual carriageway was laid with noisy brushed concrete and campaigns to persuade successive Governments to re-surface it with quieter Tarmac have fallen on deaf ears.
Whitehall officials said it would be too expensive and pointed out compensation packages, including the cost of double glazing, had been paid to home owners.
Noise barriers have also been erected along some parts of the road, which is one of the busiest in the county and is the main link with neighbouring Hampshire.
But now West Sussex County Council says it will be urging the Highways Agency to look again at the road and consider its resurfacing.
Cabinet member for the Environment Coun Tex Pemberton says the work should be done to reduce noise pollution as part of an improvement package for the A27, which was recently unveiled as part of the South-Coast Multi-Modal study.
